Learning the Decades

For the past 3 weeks I've been learning make-up and hair for different decades: 1920s, 1930, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.

Even though I like some of them more than others, one of my goals is to have a photoshoot of all of the different decades, complete with costumes and accessories. As soon as my schedule clears up a bit to work on this, I will. In the meantime, I will post some pics of what I've done so far in class.

These pictures are of my classmate Alyssa. I did 1920s on her. This was the Depression Era, so the look is "sad china doll"

I glued her eyebrows down and covered them up with tattoo cover up, as 1920s eyebrows were specifically super thin and straight and drooped down. Lips are a "bee-stung" red.

For Alyssa's eyebrows, I went a bit more subtle with the sadness. Some 1920s make-up can be very theatrical with the eyebrows sooooo sad, especially in silent films. For her hair, instead of finger waves, since her hair is alrealy naturally curly, I just went with a simple bun.

When I do my own photoshoot for this decade, I will do a 1920s flapper girl. I have already sourced warbrobe, which includes flapper dress, feather boa, thigh-high fishnet stockings with stilettos, feathered headdress and a cigarette holder. I have been inspired as I had just finished watching Season 2 of True Blood on DVD. In one of the episodes, Bill has a flashback of his time with his maker, I forget her name, and it was 1920s. So the girls were all in 1920s garb, hair and make-up. Now I just have to find the time to do this.

For my next post, I will post pictures of 1960s Twiggy look with Big Beehive hair, and 1970s Disco Glam.

Practicing on Kasi and Aki

Last Saturday I got my friend Kasi to come over so I can practice Smoky Eyes on her.

And sometime last week I practiced on Aki in class.

Again, these are taken with my automatic camera. Dave took some photos with Kasi's SLR and I have to get it from her so I can post them here. For now, these will do.

Evening EyeMake-up on Aki sans foundation

Day to Night Make-up Practical

For this, I had my classmate Aki as my wonderful partner and model.

The first 3 photos are from Thursday when I did the "dry run" or practice. The rest of them are from my actual exam.

It's a complete color correction, and day make-up application. Then I had to turn it into evening make-up / smokey eyes complete with false eyelashes. She was kind enough to help me with styling her hair, then we did the photoshoot.

These pictures are taken with my automatic, so they are not the greatest, so I will have to invest in an SLR soon. Our teacher / photographer took some nice professional photos of my final work though, but I haven't gotten a copy of it yet.

I was pretty happy with it, for my first ever practical exam. Next exam is Decades, we chose a decade between 1920s to 1970s, and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna do a 1920s flapper girl, complete with flapper girl costume.

Finally! School has started!

I've been waiting months for school to start, and it finally has! It's actually been 2 weeks since school started.

I'm finally doing something I've wanted to do for more than 10 years! It look me a while to get here, like travelling on a long, crooked path with a blindfold on, not really knowing where I'm going. And now I'm finally on the path I want to be on!

I'm doing a one-year diploma: Fashion and Film Make-Up Design.

I created this blog to document my progress.

I feel like a geek sometimes, I'm such a keener. I sit at the very front for demos and ask a lot of questions. I plan out my practical exams ahead of time with booking models, planning out costumes, etc. I also organize my own personal photoshoots during the weekends.

The first photos I'll put up are samples of work I've done on my classmates, as well as my first Practical Exam last Friday, which was Day to Night Make-up.

And now... on to the first photos!!!
